Caiaphas — the Jewish high priest who presided over the trial of Jesus and the early persecution of the apostles.
Caiaphas (Kaïaphas) was the high priest during Jesus's ministry and trial, serving from roughly AD 18 to 36 under Roman appointment. His nine NT appearances span the most dramatic moments of the Passion narrative: he plots Jesus's arrest (Matt 26:3), presides over the Jewish trial (Matt 26:57; John 18:13-14,24,28), and later confronts the apostles (Acts 4:6). John's Gospel preserves his unwitting prophecy — 'it is better that one man die for the people' (John 11:49-50) — which the evangelist interprets as divinely inspired irony. Luke mentions him alongside Annas to date the beginning of John the Baptist's ministry (Luke 3:2), anchoring the narrative in historical chronology.
