Jonam, an ancestor of Jesus in Luke's genealogy
Jonam is another name in Luke's genealogical record, appearing in 3:30 between Elmadam and Joseph. Like many in Luke's list, Jonam is otherwise unknown to biblical history. The name may be a variant of Joanan or related to Jonah. Luke's genealogy serves a distinct theological purpose from Matthew's: where Matthew traces royal descent through Solomon to establish Jesus's legal claim to David's throne, Luke moves through Nathan to emphasize Jesus's actual human lineage.
Senses
1. sense 1 — This obscure ancestor appears only in Luke's backward genealogy that climaxes not with Abraham but with Adam, 'the son of God.' The multilingual glosses (French Jonam, Spanish Iōnám) transliterate the Greek. By including dozens of otherwise forgotten names, Luke demonstrates that the Savior's coming required not just famous kings and prophets but generations of ordinary people through whom God patiently worked his redemptive plan toward incarnation. 1×
