2. why? (interrogative, with τί) Interrogative adverb in combination with τί, forming ἵνα τί (= ἵνα τί γένηται) meaning 'why? for what purpose?' A distinct construction from the purpose conjunction, functioning as a question word. Rendered Eng. 'why/for why,' Arb. 'لِمَاذَا' (why), Heb. 'לָמָּה' (why), Spa. 'Por qué' (why), Kor. '왜' (why), Hin. 'क्यों/किस लिए' (why/for what). Found in Luke 13:7 (why does it use up the ground?), Acts 4:25 (why did the nations rage? -- Psalm 2 quotation), Acts 7:26 (why do you wrong one another?), Matt 9:4 (why do you think evil?), Matt 27:46 (why have you forsaken me? -- Psalm 22), and 1 Cor 10:29 (for why is my freedom judged?). All auto-clusters for 'why,' 'for,' and 'for why' belong to this single interrogative construction.
