James (Iakobos) — Greek form of Jacob, borne by several NT figures including two apostles
The Hellenized form of the Hebrew name Ya'aqov (Jacob), borne by at least four persons in the New Testament. James son of Zebedee, brother of John, was among the inner circle of three disciples and the first apostle martyred (Acts 12:2). James son of Alphaeus was another of the Twelve (Matt 10:3), often identified with 'James the less' (Mark 15:40). James the brother of the Lord emerged as a pillar of the Jerusalem church (Gal 1:19; 2:9) and is the traditional author of the Epistle of James. A fourth James is known only as the father of the apostle Judas (Luke 6:16).

Senses
1. James (Iakobos) The proper name Iakobos (James), borne by several NT individuals. Its Hebrew origin (Ya'aqov) links it to the patriarch, but the Greek form distinguishes NT bearers. French 'Jacques,' German 'Jakobus,' and Spanish 'Jacobo' reflect distinct transliteration traditions. References span the calling narratives (Matt 4:21), the Jerusalem council (Gal 2:9), and the epistle salutation (Jas 1:1). 42×
