Jacob — the patriarch Israel and an ancestor of Jesus in Matthew's genealogy
Iakob is the indeclinable Greek transliteration of Hebrew Ya'aqov, appearing 27 times in the New Testament for two distinct individuals. The patriarch Jacob dominates, invoked as the third member of the ancestral triad 'Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob' in Jesus' teaching about the resurrection (Matt 8:11; 22:32; Mark 12:26; Luke 13:28; Acts 3:13; 7:32). John's Gospel locates Jesus at Jacob's well near Sychar, where the Samaritan woman asks whether Jesus is 'greater than our father Jacob' (John 4:5-6, 12). Stephen's speech in Acts 7 recounts Jacob's entire story from the birth of the twelve patriarchs through the descent into Egypt (Acts 7:8-15, 46). Paul cites the oracle 'Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated' in his argument about divine election (Rom 9:13). A second Jacob appears in Matthew's genealogy as the father of Joseph, husband of Mary (Matt 1:15-16). Spanish and French preserve the name as 'Jacob'; German renders it 'Jakob.'
