Θωμᾶς (Thōmas) is the proper name of one of Jesus' twelve apostles, a name derived from Aramaic תאומא meaning 'twin,' which John's Gospel translates with the Greek equivalent Didymus (John 11:16; 20:24; 21:2). Thomas appears in every apostolic list (Matt 10:3; Mark 3:18; Luke 6:15; Acts 1:13). John's Gospel gives him particular prominence: he declares 'let us also go, that we may die with him' before the raising of Lazarus (John 11:16), asks 'Lord, we do not know where you are going' at the Last Supper (John 14:5), and famously doubts the resurrection until encountering the risen Christ, whereupon he makes the climactic confession 'My Lord and my God!' (John 20:24-28). Spanish 'Tomás' and Arabic 'تُومَا' preserve the name.
