Θευδᾶς G2333
Theudas, personal name; possibly contracted from Theodoros; a Jewish revolutionary mentioned in Acts.
This name, possibly a shortened form of Theodoros ('gift of God'), identifies a failed revolutionary mentioned by Gamaliel in Acts. According to Gamaliel's speech, Theudas claimed to be somebody important, attracted about four hundred followers, but was killed and his movement scattered. The historical identification is debated—Josephus mentions a Theudas active later than this speech. The name serves Gamaliel's argument that if the apostles' movement isn't from God, it will likewise fail. Like many biblical names, it provides a brief window into the turbulent political landscape of first-century Judea.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Acts 5:36 records Gamaliel citing Theudas as an example of a failed messianic pretender who rose up claiming importance, gathered four hundred men, was killed, and saw his followers dispersed. The name likely abbreviates Theodoros. Historical identification with Josephus's later Theudas creates chronological difficulties. The multilingual transliterations preserve the Greek form. Gamaliel's point doesn't depend on precise historical details but on the pattern: human movements fail, divine ones succeed. Theudas represents the many would-be revolutionaries whose movements collapsed without God's backing. 1×
