1. put to death (active) — To cause someone to die; to kill or execute. The active voice of thanatoo used when human agents deliberately bring about the death of another person. In the Gospels, this sense appears in the plotting against Jesus: the chief priests and scribes sought how they 'might put him to death' (Matt 26:59, Mark 14:55), and Jesus prophesied that children would cause parents to be 'put to death' (Matt 10:21, Mark 13:12, Luke 21:16). In Rom 8:13 Paul exhorts believers to 'put to death' the deeds of the body by the Spirit, a metaphorical extension of the same active causative meaning. In 1 Pet 3:18 Christ is described as 'having been put to death in the flesh' (thanatotheis sarki), the central Christological statement of vicarious suffering.
