θάλπ-ω G2282
to cherish, to warm, to care for tenderly
Originally meaning to warm or heat something, this verb came to describe tender care, cherishing, and nurturing. Paul uses it metaphorically in Ephesians 5:29: 'No one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church.' The warming imagery suggests affectionate care beyond mere provision—one cradles and comforts what one cherishes. In 1 Thessalonians 2:7, Paul says, 'we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother cherishes her own children,' using the same verb to describe his tender apostolic care. The verb conveys warm devotion, not cold duty.
Sentidos
1. sense 1 — Both uses link cherishing to bodily care—husbands to their bodies/wives (Ephesians 5) and nursing mothers to infants (1 Thessalonians 2)—as analogies for spiritual relationships. The physical warmth of holding a baby or caring for one's own flesh becomes the model for Christ's care of the church and Paul's care of converts. The German 'waermen' (to warm) preserves the literal root, while the contexts expand it to encompass all the tender affection and protective nurture that characterize self-giving love. 2×
