The proper name of the eighth-century BC prophet whose oracles are the most frequently cited Old Testament source in the New Testament. Nearly every occurrence introduces a quotation formula: 'as Isaiah the prophet said' or 'as it is written in Isaiah.' Matthew alone cites him seven times to frame Jesus' ministry as prophetic fulfillment (Matt 3:3; 4:14; 8:17; 12:17; 13:14, 35; 15:7). Acts 8:28-30 narrates the Ethiopian eunuch reading from Isaiah's scroll -- a pivotal scene linking the prophet's text to its messianic interpretation. Spanish Isaias, French Esaie, and German Jesaja all transliterate the Hebrew yeshayahu ('Yahweh is salvation').
