Herodians, partisans or supporters of Herod's dynasty and policies
The Herodians were a political faction supporting the Herodian dynasty and its accommodation with Roman rule. They appear in the Gospels as unlikely allies of the Pharisees in opposition to Jesus. In Mark 3:6 they conspire with Pharisees to destroy Jesus after the Sabbath healing controversy. In Mark 12:13 and Matthew 22:16 they join forces to trap Jesus with the question about paying taxes to Caesar. Josephus describes this group as 'those who think the things of Herod' (φρονοῦντας τὰ Ἡρῴδου). The multilingual renderings preserve the Greek form, as this is an ethnic-political designation unique to first-century Judea.

Senses
1. sense 1 The single sense identifies a specific political party in Jesus' time. The consistent pairing with Pharisees—strange bedfellows given their different theological and political orientations—highlights the threat Jesus posed to diverse power structures. The Pharisees opposed Roman accommodation; the Herodians depended on it. Yet both saw Jesus as dangerous. The tax question in Matthew 22 and Mark 12 was perfectly calibrated to their joint interests: affirming Roman taxes would alienate the Pharisees' base; denying them would give Herodians grounds to report Jesus to Roman authorities. All translations transliterate rather than translate, recognizing this as a proper designation.
