Ἡρῴδης G2264
Herod — members of the Herodian dynasty: Herod the Great, Herod Antipas, and Herod Agrippa I
Herodes appears 43 times in the New Testament, designating three members of the Herodian ruling family installed by Rome. Herod the Great is the figure of Matthew's infancy narrative, the king who ordered the massacre of Bethlehem's children (Matt 2:16). Herod Antipas — the tetrarch — dominates the Gospel accounts, responsible for the imprisonment and beheading of John the Baptist (Mark 6:17-28) and for the mocking of Jesus during his trial (Luke 23:7-11). Herod Agrippa I appears in Acts 12 as the persecutor of the early church who executed James and imprisoned Peter. The name transliterates directly across languages — Spanish 'Herodes,' French 'Herode,' German 'Herodes' — since it is a Hellenistic dynastic name, not a Semitic word.
