1. suffer loss, forfeit, be damaged — The sole NT sense of ζημιόω (exclusively passive in the NT), meaning to suffer loss, to be damaged, to forfeit something of value, or to experience penalty/detriment. The verb derives from ζημία (loss, damage, penalty) and all NT occurrences express the same core concept of being on the losing end of a transaction or experience. Key passages include: Jesus' rhetorical question about gaining the whole world but forfeiting one's soul/life (Matt 16:26, ζημιωθῇ; Mark 8:36, ζημιωθῆναι; Luke 9:25, ζημιωθείς -- the Synoptic triple tradition), Paul's statement that a builder whose work is burned up 'will suffer loss' though he himself will be saved (1 Cor 3:15, ζημιωθήσεται), Paul's purpose that the Corinthians should 'suffer no loss' from his severe letter (2 Cor 7:9, ζημιωθῆτε), and Paul's personal testimony of having 'suffered the loss' of all things for the surpassing worth of knowing Christ (Phil 3:8, ἐζημιώθην). Multilingual glosses uniformly reflect loss/damage: Arabic يَخْسَرُ/خَسِرْتُ (he loses/I lost), Hebrew יַפְסִיד/יִנָּזֵק (he will lose/he will be damaged), Korean 잃으면/해를 입으리라 (if he loses/will suffer harm), Spanish perdiere/sufrirá pérdida (would lose/will suffer loss), French perdre/subir une perte (to lose/to suffer a loss), German Schaden leiden (to suffer damage), Hindi हानि उठाएगा/खोये (will bear loss/would lose). The different passive forms (future, aorist subjunctive, aorist infinitive, aorist participle, aorist indicative) are purely inflectional variants of this single sense. 6×
