Ζαχαρίας G2197
Zacharias/Zechariah — priestly father of John the Baptist; also the murdered prophet son of Berechiah
The proper name Ζαχαρίας (Zacharias) refers primarily to the elderly priest of the division of Abijah who became the father of John the Baptist. Luke's infancy narrative tells his story: the angelic announcement while he burns incense, his disbelief and resulting muteness, and the Benedictus when his tongue is loosed at John's circumcision (Luke 1:5-67; 3:2). A second Zacharias appears in Jesus' indictment of the scribes — 'the blood of Zechariah son of Berechiah, murdered between the sanctuary and the altar' (Matt 23:35; Luke 11:51). Spanish 'Zacarías' and Arabic 'زَكَرِيَّا' preserve the name.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Zacharias the priest, father of John the Baptist — an elderly Levitical priest of the division of Abijah, husband of Elizabeth. While serving his priestly course in the temple, the angel Gabriel announces John's birth; Zacharias doubts and is struck mute until the child's circumcision, when he prophesies the Benedictus (Luke 1:5-67). Luke 3:2 identifies John by patronymic as 'son of Zacharias.' All 9 occurrences in Luke refer to this figure. Spanish 'Zacarías,' Korean '사가랴,' and Arabic 'زَكَرِيَّا' transliterate consistently across languages. 11×
