The temple priesthood was organized into 24 divisions, each serving for a week at a time in rotation (1 Chronicles 24). This word refers to one of those divisions and appears only in Luke 1, in the narrative of Zechariah. Verse 5 identifies Zechariah as belonging to 'the division of Abijah' (the eighth division), and verse 8 notes that he was serving in the temple 'in the order of his division' when Gabriel appeared to announce John the Baptist's birth. This detail grounds the angel's announcement in the ordinary rhythms of priestly duty.
