the Euphrates River, major river of Mesopotamia
One of the four great rivers flowing from Eden (Genesis 2:14), the Euphrates marked the northeastern boundary of the Promised Land and represented the edge of the known world for ancient Israel. In Revelation, this river appears twice in apocalyptic visions: at 9:14, four angels bound at the Euphrates are released to execute judgment, and at 16:12, the great river dries up to prepare the way for kings from the east. The river thus serves as a symbolic boundary between the holy land and the threatening powers of the east.

Sentidos
1. sense 1 Both Revelation references deploy the Euphrates with its full freight of Old Testament symbolism—it's the boundary beyond which enemy armies (Assyria, Babylon) originated. The drying up in 16:12 echoes the Red Sea and Jordan crossings, while the bound angels at 9:14 suggest demonic forces restrained at the edge of civilization, waiting to be unleashed in the final conflict.
