1. from outside, outwardly, external — Adverb and preposition indicating origin from outside, external appearance, or the outside surface of something. All three inflectional clusters express the same basic concept of externality, whether as a spatial direction ('from outside'), a contrasting marker ('outwardly' vs. inwardly), or an attributive qualifier ('outward/external'). Multilingual evidence: eng 'outside/from outside/without/outward', spa 'de afuera/por fuera/de fuera/exterior' (from outside/on the outside/exterior), hin 'baahar/baahar se/baahri' (outside/from outside/outer), arb 'kharija/min kharijin/al-khariji' (outside/from outside/the external), kor 'bak eseo/bakkateuro/bakkat-ui' (from outside/outwardly/of the outside), swa 'nje ya/nje' (outside of/outside). Jesus uses it to contrast inner and outer purity (Matt 23:25-28, outside of the cup; Mark 7:15, from without entering). 13×
