Ninth — ordinal numeral marking the ninth hour (about 3 PM), pivotal in crucifixion and parable narratives
The adjective ἔνατος (enatos) is the ordinal form of 'nine,' occurring exclusively in the NT to designate the ninth hour of the day (roughly 3 PM by Jewish reckoning). Its most theologically weighty appearances frame the darkness at the crucifixion: from the sixth hour darkness covered the land until the ninth hour, when Jesus cried out (Matt 27:45-46; Mark 15:33-34; Luke 23:44). The parable of the laborers in the vineyard mentions workers hired at the ninth hour (Matt 20:5). Cornelius's vision and his prayer occur at the ninth hour (Acts 10:3, 30). Spanish 'novena (hora),' Arabic التَّاسِعَة, Hindi नौवें, and Korean 아홉째 all mark ordinal ninth uniformly.

Senses
1. sense 1 The ordinal numeral 'ninth,' used exclusively in the NT to mark the ninth hour — approximately 3 PM by the Jewish division of daylight. It frames the climactic moment of the crucifixion when darkness lifts and Jesus cries out from the cross (Matt 27:45-46; Mark 15:33-34; Luke 23:44). In the parable of the vineyard workers, laborers are hired at the ninth hour as among the last (Matt 20:5). Cornelius receives his angelic vision during ninth-hour prayer (Acts 10:3, 30). The term carries no semantic variation across its occurrences. 10×
