ἐνέργ-εια G1753
Working, activity, operative power; especially of divine or supernatural energy at work producing effects.
A noun denoting active, effective power — not static potential but energy actually at work producing results. In the New Testament it appears almost exclusively in Paul's letters and refers overwhelmingly to divine power in operation. Paul speaks of 'the working of his mighty strength' that raised Christ from the dead (Eph 1:19), the 'energy' given to him for apostolic ministry (Eph 3:7; Col 1:29), and Christ's power 'that enables him to subject all things to himself' (Phil 3:21). The body of Christ grows through the 'working' of each individual part (Eph 4:16). Spanish 'energía' preserves the Greek etymological connection perfectly, while German 'Wirkung' ('effect, working') captures the emphasis on active operation rather than dormant capacity.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Active, operative power or energy at work — especially divine or supernatural energy that produces tangible effects. In Pauline usage this denotes God's mighty power in action: the working that raised Christ and seated him in glory (Eph 1:19), the divine energy empowering Paul's apostolic ministry (Eph 3:7; Col 1:29), Christ's power to transform and subject all things (Phil 3:21), and the energy by which each member contributes to the body's growth (Eph 4:16). The term also appears negatively of Satanic counterfeiting (2 Thess 2:9, 11). Spanish 'energía/operación' and German 'Wirkung' both capture the active, effectual quality — this is power realized, not merely possessed. 8×
