ἕνδεκα G1733
Eleven; the cardinal number, used in the NT for the apostolic group after Judas's departure.
The indeclinable numeral 'eleven' appears in the NT exclusively as a designation for the apostolic circle between Judas's betrayal and Matthias's appointment. It functions almost as a title -- 'the Eleven' -- marking a poignant gap in the Twelve. The risen Jesus appears to the Eleven (Mark 16:14; Matt 28:16), the women report the empty tomb to the Eleven (Luke 24:9, 33), and the group is restored to twelve when Matthias is numbered with the Eleven (Acts 1:26). Spanish 'once' and French 'onze' directly translate the number, but the theological weight lies in the absence it implies.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The cardinal number eleven, used in every NT occurrence as a quasi-title for the apostolic group following Judas Iscariot's defection and prior to Matthias's election. 'The Eleven' (hoi hendeka) appears at the Great Commission (Matt 28:16), the post-resurrection appearance (Mark 16:14), the report from the empty tomb (Luke 24:9), the Emmaus disciples' return (Luke 24:33), and the selection of Matthias (Acts 1:26; 2:14). The number itself carries narrative tension -- it signals incompleteness, a body that should be twelve. 6×
