N-DFS  |  9× in 1 sense
Elizabeth; the wife of the priest Zechariah and mother of John the Baptist.
The Greek form of the Hebrew name Elisheba ('my God is an oath' or 'God is abundance'), borne in the NT by the wife of the priest Zechariah and mother of John the Baptist. She appears exclusively in Luke's infancy narrative (Luke 1:5-80), where she is described as righteous, barren in old age, and miraculously pregnant — a deliberate echo of Sarah, Hannah, and other barren mothers in Israel's story. Her joyful recognition of Mary's child leaping in her womb (Luke 1:41-44) is a key moment in Luke's theology of prophetic fulfillment.

Senses
1. sense 1 The proper name Elizabeth (Greek Elisabet, from Hebrew Elisheba, 'my God is an oath'), identifying the wife of the priest Zechariah and mother of John the Baptist. All nine occurrences are in Luke 1, where she is introduced as a daughter of Aaron, praised as blameless, and narratively paired with Mary in the Visitation scene (Luke 1:36-45). Translations uniformly transliterate the name: Spanish 'Elisábet,' French 'Élisabeth,' German 'Elisabeth.'
