seek out, search for diligently; require, demand an accounting of
1. seek out, search for diligently — To seek out earnestly or search for with diligence, especially in a religious context of seeking God or spiritual realities. The prefix ek- intensifies the basic zeteo 'seek,' conveying thoroughness and earnestness. In Rom 3:11 (quoting Ps 14:2/53:3), 'there is no one who seeks out (ekzeton) God.' In Heb 11:6, God 'rewards those who seek him' (ekzetousin). In Acts 15:17 (quoting Amos 9:12), 'so that the rest of mankind may seek out (ekzetesosin) the Lord.' Esau 'sought it (the blessing) with tears' (ekzetesas, Heb 12:17). The prophets 'sought out and searched carefully' (exezetasan, 1 Pet 1:10) concerning the coming grace. Hebrew glosses use doresh 'one who seeks/inquires' and biqqeshah 'sought'; Arabic talib/bahathu; Korean channeun/ganjeolhi-chatgo; Spanish buscar/buscaron. 5×

2. require, demand an accounting of — To demand something back, to require an accounting or reckoning, especially of blood-guilt. This is a distinct semantic development from the 'seek' root, found in Luke 11:50-51 where Jesus says the blood of all the prophets 'will be required' (ekzetethe, aorist subjunctive passive; ekzetethesetai, future indicative passive) 'of this generation.' The passive voice with blood as subject and a generation as the agent from whom it is demanded creates a forensic/retributive sense absent from the devotional 'seek God' usage. Hebrew glosses use yiddaresh (niphal of darash, 'be required/demanded'); Arabic yutlaba 'be demanded'; Korean guhaejirira 'will be sought/required'; Spanish sea-demandada/sera-demandada. This forensic sense of demanding blood-guilt is well attested in the LXX (Gen 9:5, 42:22; 2 Sam 4:11). 2×
