διάφορος — diferente, diverso; en forma comparativa: superior, más excelente
διάφορος (de διαφέρω, 'llevar a través, diferir') significa 'diferente' o 'diverso', y en su forma comparativa (διαφορώτερος) adquiere el sentido de 'más excelente, superior'. En el Nuevo Testamento abarca ambos registros. Romanos 12:6 habla de dones que difieren (διάφορα) según la gracia recibida; Hebreos 9:10 menciona diversas (διαφόροις) abluciones rituales. Pero en Hebreos 1:4 y 8:6 la forma comparativa eleva el significado: Cristo ha heredado un nombre más excelente y es mediador de un pacto superior. La palabra cubre así tanto la mera variedad como la superioridad cualitativa.
