Demas, companion of Paul who later deserted him, loving the present world
Demas (possibly shortened from Demetrius) was one of Paul's co-workers, mentioned alongside Luke and other faithful companions. Colossians and Philemon record him serving with Paul during an imprisonment, likely in Rome. However, 2 Timothy tells the tragic conclusion: 'Demas has deserted me, having loved this present world, and has departed for Thessalonica.' His story provides a sobering example of a ministry companion who ultimately chose temporal security or comfort over costly faithfulness to Christ and His gospel.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Colossians 4:14 includes Demas among those sending greetings. Philemon 24 lists him among Paul's 'fellow workers.' 2 Timothy 4:10 records the painful desertion: 'Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me.' The multilingual glosses preserve the Greek name—Spanish 'Dēmâs,' French preserving the Greek, German 'Demas.' The stark contrast between the earlier companionship and final desertion has made Demas a proverbial figure representing those who begin well but fail to endure when tested by worldly attractions. 3×
