Its roots are temporal ('at this very point'), but in the New Testament it functions mainly as a rhetorical intensifier. In Jesus' parable of the sower, the good soil 'indeed' bears fruit (Matt 13:23). The shepherds say to one another, 'Let us now go to Bethlehem' (Luke 2:15), where the particle adds eager resolve. The Antioch church is worshipping and fasting when the Holy Spirit says, 'Now then, set apart Barnabas and Saul' (Acts 13:2). Paul uses it with emphasis: 'You were bought with a price; so then, glorify God' (1 Cor 6:20). German 'dann' captures the inferential dimension, while Spanish and French often absorb its force into sentence-level emphasis rather than a dedicated word.
