Δαμάζω significa someter o domar lo que es salvaje e indómito. Marcos 5:4 lo emplea para describir al endemoniado gadareno a quien nadie podía sujetar; ni siquiera las cadenas lograban 'domarlo'. Santiago usa la palabra tres veces en su discurso sobre la lengua: toda especie de bestia y ave ha sido domada por el ser humano (Stg 3:7), pero ningún ser humano puede domar la lengua (Stg 3:8). El contraste entre el dominio de la humanidad sobre la naturaleza y su impotencia ante su propia habla constituye uno de los argumentos más impactantes de Santiago.
