Make known, reveal, declare; be made known; come to know
A Greek verb at the heart of divine revelation in the New Testament. In its active voice, it means to make known or declare—Jesus tells the disciples in John 15:15 that He has made known to them everything He heard from the Father. In the passive, it describes truths being revealed, as in Ephesians 3:5 where the mystery of Christ is made known to apostles and prophets by the Spirit. Spanish 'dar a conocer' and German 'kundtun' preserve the causative force. One debated instance at Philippians 1:22 may carry the older classical sense of 'come to know' or 'discern.'
3. know, be acquainted with — A rare middle or intransitive sense at Philippians 1:22, where Paul may mean 'I do not know' or 'I cannot discern' what to choose between life and death. This aligns with the classical Greek sense of 'gain knowledge of' or 'become acquainted with,' a semantic direction mostly absent from the New Testament but attested in Sophocles and Plato. 1×

Senses
1. make known, reveal, declare — The active causative sense: to make known, reveal, or declare information to others. Dominates New Testament usage, spanning Jesus' revelatory acts (John 15:15, 17:26), apostolic proclamation (Colossians 1:27), and prayer requests (Philippians 4:6). Spanish 'hacer conocer' and French 'faire connaitre' both mirror the causative structure. Luke 2:15-17 shows shepherds making known the angelic message. 19×

2. be made known, be revealed — The passive counterpart: to be made known, to be revealed or disclosed. Central to Pauline mystery theology—Romans 16:26 and Ephesians 3:3-10 describe God's eternal plan now 'gnorizo'-ed to the nations. The passive frames human recipients as those to whom divine truth comes, not those who discover it. German 'kundgetan werden' captures this receptive dimension. 5×
