En el griego clásico, γλυκύς describía todo lo dulce al gusto o al olfato y se extendía figuradamente a lo agradable o querido. El Nuevo Testamento lo emplea exclusivamente en su sentido literal. Santiago contrasta el agua dulce y la amarga que brotan de un mismo manantial como metáfora del hablar incoherente (Stg 3:11-12), mientras que Apocalipsis describe el librito que sabe dulce como la miel en la boca pero se vuelve amargo en el estómago (Ap 10:9-10). El término captura esa cualidad sensorial básica de dulzura.
