Gallio, Roman proconsul of Achaia who dismissed charges against Paul in Corinth
Gallio was the Roman proconsul of Achaia during Paul's ministry in Corinth around AD 51-52. Brother of the philosopher Seneca, Gallio is known from extrabiblical sources as a cultured and affable administrator. When Jewish leaders brought Paul before his judgment seat, Gallio refused to adjudicate what he considered an internal religious dispute, effectively providing legal precedent that Christianity was not illegal under Roman law. His dismissive attitude toward the beating of Sosthenes suggests either indifference to Jewish-Christian conflicts or deliberate protection of Paul's mission.

Senses
1. sense 1 All three references occur in Acts 18:12, 14, 17, narrating the failed attempt by Corinthian Jews to prosecute Paul before the proconsul. Gallio's ruling that the dispute involved 'questions about words and names and your own law' established an important legal precedent for early Christian mission. The multilingual glosses preserve the Latin name with Greek spelling variations. Historical records (the Delphi inscription) confirm Gallio's proconsulship, making this one of the New Testament's most precisely datable events.
