γάϊος[ᾱ] G1050
Gaius; a proper name borne by several early Christians in the NT, a common Roman praenomen.
A personal name appearing across the NT for what may be two to four distinct individuals. Paul baptized a Gaius in Corinth (1 Cor 1:14), likely the same person who hosted the whole church (Rom 16:23). A Gaius from Macedonia was caught up in the Ephesian riot (Acts 19:29), while a Gaius from Derbe traveled with Paul (Acts 20:4). The elder John addresses his third epistle to a beloved Gaius (3 John 1:1). The name was one of the most common Roman praenomina, which explains its frequency among Gentile converts.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A proper name (Latin Gaius) borne by several early Christians. The name appears in five passages spanning Paul's ministry and the Johannine epistles. It was among the eighteen traditional Roman praenomina, making it extremely common in the Greco-Roman world. Spanish preserves the Greek spelling as 'Gáios,' while English and German standardize to the Latin form 'Gaius,' reflecting the name's dual cultural heritage in the early church's mixed Jewish-Gentile communities. 5×
