Physical force or violence; coercive power applied against resistance
The noun bía denotes raw physical force or violent compulsion. In classical Greek it ranged from heroic strength to acts of brutality, and the NT uses cluster tightly around the latter — all four occurrences appear in Acts describing tense confrontations. The temple guard restrains themselves from violence when arresting the apostles (Acts 5:26); soldiers must carry Paul through a mob by force (Acts 21:35); and the ship at Malta is broken apart by the violence of the waves (Acts 27:41). Spanish and French both render it 'violencia/violence,' capturing the coercive overtone.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Bodily force or violent compulsion exerted against persons or things, especially in situations of conflict or crisis. Every NT occurrence is in Acts: the cautious restraint of the temple guard (5:26), soldiers physically carrying Paul through a riotous crowd (21:35), a disputed textual variant in 24:7, and the destructive power of surf smashing a ship (27:41). Spanish 'violencia' and French 'violence' uniformly convey the sense of coercive physical power rather than mere strength. 4×
