This proper noun designates Bar-Jesus (Aramaic: 'son of Joshua'), the Jewish false prophet and sorcerer whom Paul encountered on Cyprus (Acts 13:6-12). Also called Elymas, he opposed Paul and Barnabas, trying to turn the proconsul away from the faith.
