Βάαλ G0896
Baal, the Canaanite deity; the storm and fertility god opposed by Israel's prophets
This proper noun designates Baal, the Canaanite storm and fertility deity whose worship repeatedly seduced Israel into idolatry. Paul alludes to the Elijah narrative in Romans 11:4, quoting God's assurance to the prophet: 'I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.' The name evokes Israel's chronic apostasy and Yahweh's preservation of a faithful remnant. In classical Hebrew, 'Baal' means 'lord' or 'master,' but it became synonymous with false worship. Paul uses the Baal story to illustrate God's ongoing election of a remnant within Israel—a pattern that continues in the gospel age.
Sentidos
1. sense 1 — The evidence simply transliterates the name (Baal, Baál) across languages, confirming it as the well-known Canaanite deity. Romans 11:4 invokes Baal to recall Elijah's despair and God's reassurance of a hidden remnant—a typological precedent for Paul's argument that God has not rejected Israel but continues to preserve a believing minority by grace. 1×

Βάαλ (Rec. βαάλ), ὁ, ἡ, indecl. (Heb. בַּעַל, lord), Baal: Rom.11:4 (LXX). The fem. art. here agrees with the usage of LXX, where, following a similar Hebrew practice (בֹּשֶׁת for בַּעַל), αἰσχύνη appears to have been substituted in reading for the written Βάαλ (cf. 3Ki.18:19), and to account for the frequently use of the fem. art. bef. Β. The usage, however, is not general, and in the passage cited in Ro (3Ki.19:18), LXX reads τῷ Β. † (From Abbott-Smith. LSJ has no entry)
