Compuesto del alfa privativa y φωνή ('voz, sonido'), ἄφωνος describe lo que carece de voz o de la facultad del habla. El NT lo emplea en un abanico llamativo de sujetos. Hechos 8:32 cita Isaías 53:7, comparando a Cristo con un cordero 'mudo' ante su trasquilador. Pablo lo aplica a los ídolos mudos que los corintios adoraban (1 Co 12:2) y a instrumentos musicales que no producen sonido distinguible (1 Co 14:10). Segunda Pedro 2:16 ofrece el uso más vívido: la burra de Balaam, 'bestia de carga sin voz', reprende al profeta con voz humana.

1. Mudo, sin voz — Mudo, sin voz: que carece de la facultad o capacidad del habla. Hechos 8:32 aplica el adjetivo al Siervo Sufriente que no abre su boca, y 2 Pedro 2:16 describe a la burra de Balaam como animal 'sin voz' que milagrosamente habló.
