Literally meaning 'out of place' (from the privative alpha and topos, 'place'), atopos covers a wide semantic range from the odd or unusual to the morally reprehensible. Luke 23:41 carries the strongest moral force: the penitent thief declares that Jesus 'has done nothing wrong,' in stark contrast to their own crimes. Acts 25:5 uses it more mildly — if there is 'anything wrong' with Paul, let them accuse him. Acts 28:6 describes the expected but absent physical harm from a snakebite — 'nothing unusual' happened to Paul. Second Thessalonians 3:2 asks for prayer against 'unreasonable and wicked' people. French 'absurde/hors-du-chemin' nicely captures the spatial metaphor of being off the proper path.
