Formed from the privative alpha and time ('honor, value'), atimos describes a person or thing deprived of honor or regarded as worthless. Jesus quotes the proverb 'a prophet is not without honor except in his hometown' (Matt 13:57; Mark 6:4), using the adjective to name the paradox of local familiarity breeding contempt. Paul adopts the word in his Corinthian correspondence: he calls apostles 'dishonored' (1 Cor 4:10) in his ironic catalog of apostolic hardships, and in 1 Corinthians 12:23 he discusses the 'less honorable' members of the body receiving greater honor. Spanish 'sin-honor/despreciados' and French 'sans-honneur' both transparently preserve the privative structure.
