Ἀσήρ G0768
Asher, a Hebrew patriarch and tribal ancestor
A Hebrew name (meaning 'happy' or 'blessed') referring to Jacob's eighth son and the tribe descended from him. In Luke 2:36, Anna the prophetess is identified as from the tribe of Asher. In Revelation 7:6, the tribe of Asher is listed among the 144,000 sealed from the twelve tribes. Asher's territory was in northern Israel along the Mediterranean coast. The name is indeclinable in Greek, maintaining its Hebrew form.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Both New Testament occurrences use Asher as a tribal identifier rather than referring to the patriarch himself. Anna's tribal affiliation (Luke 2:36) is one of the few specific tribal identities mentioned in the New Testament, showing preservation of genealogical memory. The Revelation 7:6 listing includes all twelve tribes in symbolic completeness. All languages transliterate the name with minor phonetic variation (German 'Asser', French 'Aser', Spanish 'Asēr'). 2×
