Chief tax collector, a senior official overseeing multiple tax collectors in a district
This New Testament coinage describes a supervisory tax collector who managed other publicans. Zacchaeus held this position in Jericho, making him both wealthy and despised—wealthy because he took a cut from multiple collection stations, despised because he led a system that extracted Rome's tribute from his own people. The term appears nowhere else in Greek literature, seemingly Luke's precise description of Zacchaeus's particular administrative role.

Sentidos
1. sense 1 Luke 19:2 introduces Zacchaeus uniquely as a 'chief tax collector' (Spanish 'jefe-de-recaudadores' = boss of collectors). His role supervising other tax collectors in the prosperous Jericho district explains both his great wealth and the crowd's horror when Jesus chose his house for dinner. The compound term emphasizes that Zacchaeus wasn't merely a collaborator but led collaboration, making Jesus' gracious pursuit of him all the more scandalous and transformative.
