Appius (in 'Forum of Appius,' a Roman town)
This is the genitive form of the Roman name Appius, appearing in the phrase 'Appii Forum' (Forum or Market of Appius), a town along the Appian Way about 43 miles south of Rome. The town was named after Appius Claudius Caecus, the Roman censor who built the famous Appian Way in the 4th century BC. Luke mentions it as one of the places where Roman Christians traveled to meet Paul as he approached Rome under guard.

Senses
1. sense 1 The name Appius, appearing as part of the place name 'Forum of Appius.' Acts 28:15 records that when Christians in Rome heard Paul was coming, some traveled as far as the Forum of Appius to meet him. The translations retain the Latinized name: Spanish 'Foro de Appio,' French 'Appius,' German preserves the Greek genitive form, English 'Appius.' This town served as a staging post on the Appian Way, the great Roman road linking Rome to southern Italy—a fitting location for Paul's reception by the Roman church.
