To put off or lay aside, either figuratively (sinful behaviors, the old self) or literally (placing objects somewhere).
A rich verb of removal, used most often in the New Testament as a vivid metaphor for moral transformation. Believers are urged to 'put off' the old self like shedding worn-out clothing (Eph 4:22; Col 3:8), to lay aside every weight and sin that clings (Heb 12:1), and to strip away all filthiness (James 1:21). The Spanish despojar and desechar and the German ablegen powerfully convey this stripping-away image. In its rarer literal sense, the word describes physically depositing something — witnesses laid their garments at Saul's feet (Acts 7:58), and Herod had John put in prison (Matt 14:3).
1. put off, lay aside (figurative) — To put off or lay aside figuratively — casting away sinful habits, moral encumbrances, or the old self as one would remove a garment. Paul exhorts believers to 'put off' the old self (Eph 4:22), to lay aside falsehood (Eph 4:25), and to strip away anger, malice, and slander (Col 3:8). Hebrews 12:1 calls readers to lay aside every weight and entangling sin.
