Ἀπολλώς G0625
Apollos — Alexandrian Jewish Christian, eloquent preacher and associate of Paul in the early church
The proper noun Ἀπολλῶς (Apollos) identifies an Alexandrian Jew described as 'eloquent' and 'mighty in the Scriptures' (Acts 18:24). After Priscilla and Aquila instructed him more accurately in the Way, Apollos became an influential preacher in Achaia and Corinth. His prominence inadvertently fueled party divisions ('I follow Apollos,' 1 Cor 1:12; 3:4), which Paul addressed by insisting that he and Apollos were merely servants through whom God worked (1 Cor 3:5-6). Paul later urged Apollos to visit Corinth again (1 Cor 16:12) and commended him to Titus (Titus 3:13). Spanish 'Apolos,' Arabic 'أَبُلّوسُ,' Hindi 'अपुल्लोस,' Korean '아볼로.'
Senses
1. Apollos (proper noun, person) — The Alexandrian Jewish Christian, learned in the Scriptures, who received fuller instruction from Priscilla and Aquila (Acts 18:24-28) and became a significant preacher in the Corinthian church. Paul addresses the factionalism his popularity generated (1 Cor 1:12; 3:4-6, 22; 4:6), casting both himself and Apollos as fellow laborers in God's field. Mentioned also in 1 Corinthians 16:12 and Titus 3:13. All ten occurrences refer to this single individual, with case inflections (nominative, genitive, accusative) producing the different cluster forms. 10×
