Adv  |  6× in 1 sense
Worthily, in a manner worthy of; an adverb urging conduct befitting one's calling or the gospel
An adverb derived from axios ('worthy, of equal weight') that calls believers to live in a manner commensurate with the dignity of their calling. Paul uses it repeatedly as a hinge between theology and ethics: walk 'worthily' of the calling you received (Eph 4:1), of the gospel of Christ (Phil 1:27), of the Lord (Col 1:10), and of the God who calls you (1 Thess 2:12). Spanish 'dignamente' and French 'dignement' preserve the adverbial force. Romans 16:2 asks the church to receive Phoebe 'worthily of the saints.'

Senses
1. sense 1 In a manner worthy of, befittingly -- an adverb urging conduct that matches the weight or dignity of a person, calling, or reality. From axios ('of equal weight on the scales'), it conveys proportionality: one's life should balance against the value of what one has received. Romans 16:2 applies it to hospitality -- receive Phoebe 'worthily of the saints.' Ephesians 4:1, Philippians 1:27, Colossians 1:10, and 1 Thessalonians 2:12 all use it in the same exhortatory pattern: the gospel and God's calling establish a standard, and believers are urged to live up to it. Spanish 'dignamente,' French 'dignement,' and German 'wuerdig' all preserve the root connection to dignity and worth.
