worthy, deserving, fitting — describing someone or something as meriting honor, punishment, or a particular status
Axios ('worthy, deserving') derives from the root sense of 'weighing as much as' — something that tips the scale to match what is expected. In the New Testament's 41 occurrences, it evaluates persons and things against a standard of merit. Jesus declares 'the worker is worthy of his wages' (Matt 10:10; Luke 10:7), while the prodigal confesses 'I am no longer worthy to be called your son' (Luke 15:19, 21). In Revelation, the Lamb alone is 'worthy to open the scroll' (Rev 5:2, 9, 12). Spanish 'digno,' French 'digne,' German 'wurdig' all preserve the evaluative weight.
Senses
1. worthy, deserving, fitting — Evaluative adjective: a person or thing measures up to a standard of honor, reward, or condemnation. Jesus uses it to set the hospitality threshold (Matt 10:11, 13). Paul extends it to moral exhortation: 'walk worthy of the calling' (Eph 4:1). Judicially, 'deserving punishment' (Luke 23:15; Acts 25:11). Revelation's 'worthy is the Lamb' (5:12) is the supreme positive application. 41×
