Antipas, a Christian martyr in Pergamum
Antipas (abbreviated from Antipater, meaning 'like the father') was a Christian martyr in Pergamum. The risen Christ mentions him in Revelation 2:13 as 'my faithful witness, who was killed among you.' He is the only individual martyr named in Revelation's seven letters, suggesting his death had particular significance for the Pergamum church. The name was common in the Herodian dynasty. All four translation languages preserve the name 'Antipas' with minimal phonetic variation, recognizing it as a proper name.
