Ananias — name borne by three NT figures: the deceitful husband, the Damascus disciple, and the high priest
Ἀνανίας (Ananias), the Greek form of Hebrew Hananiah ('the LORD is gracious'), identifies three distinct persons in Acts. First, Ananias the husband of Sapphira, who lied about the sale price of property and fell dead at Peter's feet (Acts 5:1-5). Second, Ananias the devout disciple in Damascus whom the Lord sent to restore Saul's sight and baptize him (Acts 9:10-17; 22:12). Third, Ananias the high priest who presided over Paul's trial before the Sanhedrin and whom Paul sharply rebuked as a 'whitewashed wall' (Acts 23:2; 24:1). Spanish 'Ananías' preserves the name across all three referents.

Senses
1. sense 1 Ananias husband of Sapphira, a member of the early Jerusalem church who conspired with his wife to withhold part of a land sale while claiming to give all. Peter exposed the deception as lying to the Holy Spirit, and Ananias fell dead immediately (Acts 5:1-5). This episode became a sobering paradigm of divine judgment on dishonesty within the covenant community. 11×
