To change, alter, exchange, or transform; used of both sinful exchange and eschatological transformation
A verb covering the full spectrum from deliberate exchange to divine transformation. Paul uses the active voice strikingly in Romans 1:23, where humanity 'exchanged' (ellaxan) the glory of God for idols -- Spanish 'cambiaron' capturing the willful swap. In sharp contrast, the passive appears in 1 Corinthians 15:51-52 for the believers' resurrection transformation: 'we shall be changed' (allagesometha). The same root thus carries both humanity's worst trade and God's greatest gift, with Acts 6:14 adding the accusation that Jesus would 'change' Mosaic customs.
Senses
1. change, exchange, transform — To change, exchange, or transform something -- covering both the active sense of swapping one thing for another and the passive sense of being transformed. In Acts 6:14 the accusation is that Jesus will 'change' the customs Moses delivered. Romans 1:23 uses the active for the catastrophic exchange of divine glory for images -- Spanish 'cambiaron' capturing the deliberate swap. The passive in 1 Corinthians 15:51-52 describes eschatological bodily transformation, where Spanish 'cambiara' and French 'etre transforme' both highlight the radical nature of the change. Galatians 4:20 shows an interpersonal sense: Paul wishes to 'change' his tone toward the Galatians. 6×
