Adv  |  18× in 1 sense
Truly, certainly — an adverb affirming the reality or genuineness of a statement
An adverb derived from alethes ('true, unconcealed') that affirms the truthfulness or certainty of what is being said. It appears at critical moments of recognition in the Gospels — the centurion's confession 'Truly this was God's Son' (Matt 27:54; Mark 15:39) and the disciples' declaration after Jesus walks on water (Matt 14:33). Peter's Galilean accent is identified 'truly' by the bystanders (Matt 26:73). German 'wahrhaftig' and French 'vraiment' both emphasize genuine, verified truth rather than mere emphasis.

Senses
1. truly An adverb meaning 'truly, certainly, indeed,' used to affirm the reality of a claim or identity. In the NT it marks decisive confessions of faith or recognition — the centurion at the cross (Matt 27:54; Mark 15:39), the disciples in the boat (Matt 14:33) — as well as assertions of verified fact (Matt 26:73; Mark 14:70). Cross-linguistically stable across all major translations as a marker of genuine affirmation. 18×
