Aquila (Akylas), a Jewish-Christian tentmaker from Pontus, husband of Priscilla, and co-worker with the apostle Paul.
Aquila (Greek Akylas, from the Latin name meaning 'eagle') was a Jewish believer originally from Pontus in northern Asia Minor. He and his wife Priscilla (Prisca) were expelled from Rome under Claudius's edict and settled in Corinth, where they hosted Paul and shared the tentmaking trade (Acts 18:2-3). The couple later accompanied Paul to Ephesus, where they instructed Apollos more accurately in the faith (Acts 18:26). Paul consistently names them as beloved co-workers (Rom 16:3; 1 Cor 16:19; 2 Tim 4:19).
