ἀκρᾰσ-ία G0192
lack of self-control, unrestrained indulgence, moral incontinence
This noun denotes the absence of self-mastery or self-control, particularly in moral and bodily appetites. Jesus uses it in Matthew 23:25 to accuse the Pharisees of inner corruption: while they clean the outside of the cup, inside they are full of ἁρπαγῆς καὶ ἀκρασίας—greed and self-indulgence. In 1 Corinthians 7:5, Paul warns married couples not to deprive each other sexually except briefly for prayer, lest Satan tempt them διὰ τὴν ἀκρασίαν ὑμῶν—because of their lack of self-control. The term encompasses both ethical failures and bodily impulses.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The moral dimension appears consistently: Spanish 'falta de dominio propio' (lack of self-dominion) and 'desenfreno' (unbridled license), French 'intempérance,' German preserving the Greek. The two contexts reveal different spheres—general moral excess (Matthew) and sexual self-control (1 Corinthians)—but share the common thread of unrestrained appetite. 2×
