lowborn, ignoble; of no family or social standing
Paul writes that God chose 'the lowborn things of the world' (ta agenē, 1 Corinthians 1:28) to shame the powerful. The adjective contrasts with 'eugenēs' (wellborn, noble)—these are people without distinguished ancestry or social pedigree. In classical usage it could mean 'unborn' or 'ignoble,' but here clearly denotes low social status. God's election deliberately inverts human hierarchies, choosing the nobodies to nullify the somebodies. This continues Paul's theme from verses 26-27: not many wise, powerful, or noble were called—God chose the foolish, weak, and lowborn.

Sentidos
1. sense 1 The neuter plural adjective substantivally designates 'the things of low birth'—people without social credentials or family prestige. In Corinth's status-conscious culture (Greek colonies were notorious for social climbing), this would sting: the church consisted largely of the non-elite. Spanish 'de bajo nacimiento' (of low birth) and German 'niedrig geboren' (lowborn) capture the genealogical shame. Paul's point is theological inversion: God chose the genealogically insignificant to expose the futility of human status systems. What the world despises, God displays.
